Senior WordPress Developer
Use your web development skills to change the world for animals! The PETA Foundation is seeking a Senior WordPress Developer to join our team of talented project managers, designers, developers, and QA professionals. We’re the technical folks responsible for building our websites, data systems, Salesforce apps, and more, but we’re also compassionate people who support PETA’s mission to stop using animals for experimentation, food, clothing, or entertainment. You must have a passion for building technology solutions, and an excitement to learn new technologies. You will be a key part of shaping and delivering the web technology strategy for PETA entities worldwide. You are an experienced developer who doesn’t shy away from challenges and is comfortable navigating ambiguity and evolving requirements to deliver custom WordPress websites. Position Objective:
To build and maintain the PETA’s WordPress sites and support other applications and integrations
What Your Day Will Look Like:
- Working with designers, project managers, stakeholders, and other developers to take projects from the design phase to functional application
- Serving as the technical lead on specific projects, working independently to plan and execute development
- Driving industry best practices and efficiencies across the WordPress team
- Recommending and initiating improvements to existing sites, operating procedures, and use of technology
- Researching and developing a deep understanding of regulations and industry standards, and providing direction for implementing compliance measures
- Embracing a culture of mobile and user-first development practices
- Creating WordPress plugins, as needed, to support site functionality and integrations with other services and APIs
- Creating well-structured WordPress themes with performance in mind that are easy to maintain and build upon
- Demonstrating a spirit of innovation, adaptability, strong problem-solving, and the ability to self-teach, when needed
- Proactively performing cross-browser compatibility tests and iterating to work through the bugs
- Optimizing applications for speed and scalability, and initiating improvements to websites, operating procedures, and technology
- You will be responsible for advanced-level research, design, development, testing, implementation, and maintenance of all facets of web-based projects
- Reviewing other developers’ code and making recommendations for improvements for greater efficiencies, performance, and readability
- Assisting in the creation and maintenance of development-related standard operating procedures
- Documenting work and developing necessary support documents, or assisting the team with development documentation
- Communicating effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders alike and coordinating work with a distributed team
- Acting as department buddy for new developers
- Performing any other duties assigned by the supervisor
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalent work experience
- Minimum of seven years of related experience in website development roles or demonstrate sufficient development skills in lieu of years of experience
- Demonstrated experience developing WordPress themes and plugins from scratch
- Demonstrated experience using GitHub in a distributed development environment
- Ability to use regulations and best practices to guide development decisions for your own work and that of other developers
- Experience with data privacy, security, and accessibility best practices including GDPR, PCI DSS, and WCAG
- Knowledge of best practices for accessibility, performance, and responsive design
- Ability and willingness to travel on occasion
- Commitment to the objectives of the organization
- Extensive experience with the following technologies:
- WordPress coding standards and best practices
- Gutenberg and custom block development
- PHP, JavaScript, HTML5, CSS/SASS
- REST APIs
- Front-end build tools (webpack,npm, gulp, etc.)
- Advanced Custom Fields
- Using WordPress as a CMS, knowledge of core actions and filters
- Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager
- Familiarity with the following technologies/programs/platforms is helpful:
- CDNs (Cloudflare)
- Website localization
- Laravel
- Cookie consent solutions
- Elasticsearch
- Responsive frameworks (Foundation, Bootstrap, etc.)Any of the following: React, Angular, Vue.js, or similar JavaScript frameworks
Bonus Qualifications:
- Regular contributions to the WordPress Community (Support Forum, Documentation, etc.)
- Experience with automated testing, website A/B testing, and personalization
- Experience with large-scale site migrations
The salary range for this position is $84,210 – $95,342 annually. The ultimate salary within this range that will be offered to a qualified candidate will be determined based on the candidate’s experience and the cost of living in the area in which the candidate will live and work.
